ALGORITHMS FOR ALL

CONCEPTS & SKILLS IN DATA SCIENCE & MACHINE LEARNING

AS

PREVIEWED

@ CONASTA71 MELBOURNE

The game where

YOUR STUDENTS

become the

Data Science Machines!

Are you ready to embrace data science for your students, but worried about resources, and not sure where to start?

Algorithms for All is a simple-to-play yet adaptable and powerful tabletop game designed to help you and your students dive into the world of data science - all without the need to fire up a computer! This engaging resource takes the complex world of big data and machine learning and transforms it into something accessible, hands-on and fun, where your students become the Data Science Machines!  Get ready to explore data science in a whole new way - come play with us!

How do I play Algorithms for All with my students ?

Play is set around a Gameplay Poster (keep it rolled when not in use, or display it on your classroom wall :-) that guides students through the key steps in machine learning - exploratory analysis, data cleaning, feature engineering, algorithm selection and training. Students use one Foundations card deck and one or more Dataset decks to play the game. The Foundations Deck (60 card deck) guides students from their initial question, introduces students to the vocabulary and concepts of data science and machine learning, and takes them beyond the immediate analysis into Design Thinking considerations of authentic audiences for the findings of their analyses. Each Dataset Deck (40 card deck) provides a themed set of records, with multiple variables. Working in small teams, students record their play on Gameplay & Scratch Sheets (which can be submitted to the teacher as part of formative assessment). The physical Algorithms for All game is complemented by the online Algorithms for All resource site, which details alternative methods of play suitable for Stage 3 (upper primary school) to Stage 6 (upper high school) and provides Excel-based copies of the Datasets, for future exploration by older students on computer. Algorithms for All is further supported by optional Webinar-based training for teachers.
