Science for Real School Holiday Workshops

Quantal Bioscience offers a range of school holiday workshops for primary and secondary school students.

Our workshops are taught by real microbiologists and focus on the amazing and normally unseen world of microorganisms. Our workshops are fun, educational and inspiring, and offer a unique opportunity to experience Science for Real!

Mini Microbial Me (recommended for School Years K – 2)

Introducing our first school holiday science workshop especially for junior primary school – a modified version of our very popular Microbial Me workshop. Now even the littlest students can learn about the amazing microscopic world on and inside them!

Microbial Me (recommended for School Years 3 – 6)

Did you know that you are MOSTLY MICROBE?! YOU have about 100 trillion microbes living on and inside your body. That’s 100,000,000,000,000 microbes!

Get to know your microbial minions in this Science for Real workshop. Meet your teeth beasties, spawn your own minions, build and blast a biofilm and work with real microbiologists.

Microbe Planet (recommended for School Years 3 – 6)

Ten billion bacteria live in a gram of ordinary soil, a mere pinch between thumb and forefinger. They represent thousands of species, almost none of which are known to science. Into that world I would go…” (E.O. Wilson, The Naturalist). Microbes are the most abundant living thing on planet Earth. Working with real microbiologists, in this Science for Real workshop you’ll discover the hidden microbial worlds in pond water, in the soil and on plants.

Microbe Kitchen Rules (recommended for School Years 3 – 6)

You might think you’re a masterchef, but it’s really the MICROBES that RULE our KITCHENS! Yoghurt, bread, salami, cheese; our favourite foods are made by microbes. But in the depths of every sponge and cutting board lurk their not-so-pleasant pathogenic microbe counterparts. Working with real microbiologists, you’ll get to know them all in this Science for Real school holiday workshop.

Of Microbes and Minerals (recommended for School Years 3 – 6)

Learn how microbiologists classify cells and mineralogists classify crystals, and try out your new skills to identify a mystery specimen.

Then join us as we explore the close connections between microbes and minerals, through the science of geomicrobiology; we’ll travel from Earth to Mars and back again!

Make your own microbe fossils and more…

CSI: Microbiology (recommended for School Years 5 – 8)

What’s for lunch today? Salmonella salad? In this workshop you’ll work with real microbiologists to investigate a foodborne disease outbreak. Which food did it? Plus we’ll introduce you to the amazing new study of microbial forensics. Your skin has over 1,000 types of microbes on it so whatever you touch, you leave behind a trail of microbial fingerprints. And you’ll be amazed how the microbes on the bottom of your shoes can reveal all about where you’ve been!

Microbe Hunters (recommended for School Years 5 – 8)

Our most intensive workshop! Over 3 days, together we’ll learn the habits of our microbial quarry, devise and build a series of special traps for the microbes we seek, set out our traps then, bring our captures back to the lab and, armed with microscopes, classify them and put them through their paces. Throughout our safari, we’ll follow in the footsteps of important scientists like Louis Pasteur, Alexander Fleming and Antonie van Leeuwenhoek. Perhaps you’ll also discover a new antibiotic-producing fungus or a strange new ‘animacule’?!

Sea Life Up Close (recommended for School Years 5 – 8)

(As requested and designed by Natasia – thanks Natasia!

Learn all about marine microbiology and the broader marine environment in this hands-on Science for Real workshop. See our smallest forms of sea life up close! And see up close how changes in environmental conditions in our seas affect our smallest sea life, with consequences for us all. Learn about coral bleaching and marine microbial symbionts of all shapes and sizes.
